End of Year Fun In The Classroom

It is the end of the year, the last few days of school. Students are tired. Teachers are exhausted. Things in the classroom start to relax and there is more freedom to take liberties with the curriculum.

For some fun activities for the end of the year why not try out;

  • Making paper twirlers - Need colourful paper - ribbon, stapler, scissors, ruler. For each one, cut two 2.5 x 11.8cm strips from navy card and glue together for strength. From your free paper, cut two 2.5cm wide strips each to lengths of 12.2cm, 13.3cm, 15cm and 16.2cm. Arrange strips either side of the card centre, from shortest to longest. With ends lined up, staple one end. Line up the other ends, insert a hanging ribbon, and staple. Hang from a window frame or anywhere that takes your fancy.

  • Try embossed foil art - Need foil sheets, cardboard, wool, craft glue, coloured textas. Create a picture using wool glued onto the cardboard square. Let it dry first. Smooth the foil sheet over the top of the cardboard, so the picture is 3D on the foil. Use textas to colour in the picture.

  • Directed drawing of The Grinch - lead the students to draw The Grinch and use coloured pastel crayons to colour it in. Find directions here

  • Make a snowman pompom wreath - need lots of white wool, a cardboard circle, small ribbon, craft glue. Make 11 small pompoms and 11 large pompoms. Glue the bodies close together on the circle wreath. glue black dots for the eyes and buttons. Make orange carrot noses.

  • Have a go at soap carving - need a bar of soap, large paper clip, plastic knife and a template. Trace the template onto the soap with a sharp lead pencil. Cut off the edges using the plastic knife and use the large paper clip to smooth out the edges

  • Make reindeer food - Need a small plastic bag, label, 100s &1000s, rolled oats. Label should say ‘sprinkle on your lawn at night, the moon will it sparkle bright. As Santa’s reindeer’s fly and roam, this will guide them to your home’. Put in a mix of the rolled oats and the sprinkles

  • Hold a talent quest. Give time to students to rehearse and present. Set up a stage, have judges and small prizes

  • Compete against classes in a balls game carnival – play games such as Over and Under, Tunnel Ball, Captain Ball, Cut the Cake. Tally the points and award the winners a ribbon
