Living The High Life in the Maldives

At least once in your life, you must stay in an overwater bungalow in a beautiful tropical island resort. Can you imagine? One of those breath taking places with palm trees, pure white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters.

My sister and I were lucky enough to. On our way to India in 2019, we stopped off at the Maldives. And we were not disappointed. We stayed two nights in Male and two nights at Cinnamon Resort on Dhonveli Island.

Make sure to book window seats flying in and out of the Maldives. It is an incredible view. You receive your visa on entry at Velana International Airport in Male. Luckily at no fee.

If you can’t live without phone reception during your stay, then you can buy a SIM card at the airport. Pay $20 for a seven day card and 15GB.

Their currency is called Rufiyaa. $100 of Australia money = $1089 so it is easy just to take a 0 away from theirs to find ours for the conversion.

The only way to get to Dhonveli Island from Male is to take a very expensive jet boat. For a 15 minute boat ride its over $200. Ridiculously crazy priced but of course they can charge you what they want. There is no other way to get there. You can travel to other islands by local ferry but keep in mind that ferries don't run on Fridays. There are flights also to some islands but they are big dollars also.

If you want to experience the best of the best, expect to pay at least $1000 a night. But expect nothing but the best. It does mean that though that all meals and accommodation is included in the price. The food is phenomenal. Four rooms full. All cuisines you can imagine and they cater for all dietary requirements. You can eat and drink as much as you like.

We booked an overwater suite which meant we could climb right from our deck straight down into the water for a dip or a snorkel. You can hire the snorkel, life jacket and flippers or pack your own. And don’t forget the sunscreen. Sunburn is no fun.

We also had a private bath with doors that opened to the ocean. We had a transparent floor, a hammock, a small kitchenette and lounge. It was amazing and unforgettable.

The Maldives is an incredible place for sunrise and sunset. You can try stand up paddle boarding, or swim with turtles, eagle rays or hammerhead sharks. There are day trips, beaches and spa packages. You can visit the Club Med Island for $120 or visit Maafushi or Thulusdoo via ferry.

Start saving now because it is worth it. Is the Maldives on your bucket list? Would you spend that much money on food and accommodation? Or have you been to the Maldives before? Where did you stay? We would love if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
