Museums Worth A Visit

If I am completely honest with you, I have to say museums are one of the least things I look forward to visiting whilst travelling. I am usually overtired, not interested, hungry, or unable to concentrate because it’s too stuffy in there, there are too many people or I’ve put off by the price tag to get in the door.

I’m all in favour of a museum visit if we can keep it short and there must be plenty of seating for me to rest along the way. I would totally use a museum for their air-conditioning if the temperature is too hot outside. And an interesting tour guide is critical, not one of these monotone, ‘passed their used by date’ ones.

However, saying all that there have been a few museums around the world which have definitely caught my attention and been worth my time.

  • Kremlin in Moscow, Russia - actually the biggest active fortress in Europe, the best thing was our tour guide, informative and interesting. Great collection of items on display

  • British Museum, London - beware it’s huge, you can spend hours in here. The price tag is right - it is free. Beautiful and fascinating objects from all over the world. The ceiling in the foyer will take your breath away

  • Egyptian Museum, in Cairo, Egypt - so many good artefacts including Tutankhamun’s mask

  • Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden - it’s a maritime museum and has this huge ship right in the middle that you can view from all different levels

  • Quake City in Christchurch, New Zealand - a museum that recounts the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes via personal stories and hands-on exhibits - great for all ages, so much to learn and read

  • Vatican City - art, architecture, history and religion all in one. Beware you will have to queue to get in. Just take two steps to everyone else’s and you get ahead of the line

  • The Acropolis Museum - so many artefacts. Relatively new building. You can check out the website here

  • Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Xián, China- which is home to the Terracotta Warriors. Absolutely incredible to see!!

  • National Museum of Qatar in Doha, Qatar - incredible building, awesome displays, great for all ages, decent price, a great escape from the heat, can spend hours in here

How do you feel about museums? Do you love to learn about history on your holidays? Can you recommend any great museums you have been to? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below
