Stopover In Kuala Lumpur? Here’s The Highlights

I have been to Kuala Lumpur a few times now. It is a great place for a few days or a stopover to break up your trip.

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia. It is well known for its Twin Towers; the Petronas Towers, standing 451m high, which from 1998 to 2004 was the tallest building in the world, until Taipei 101 was built in Taiwan.

One of the best ways to get around is to use Uber. There are also trains that get you everywhere you need to go and the GO KL City Bus.

There is plenty of street food to try if you are game and shopping galore; if that’s your thing.

On your stopover in Kuala Lumpur, make sure to see;

  • KL Forest Eco Park - includes a 200m canopy walk and best thing is its free. Right in the middle of the city and open 7am to 7pm

  • Stroll through the Perdana Botanical Garden. Open 8:30am to 5pm. Good spot to sit and rest

  • KL Railway Station - just to check it out, it is one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations. Huge old building from 1910. You do have to pay if you want to go in.

  • Sultan Abdul Samad Building - another incredible building. One of Kuala Lumpur's earliest Moorish-style buildings

  • Do the 30 minute hike to Templer Park Water Falls, also known as Kanching Waterfalls. Pack your swimmers but beware of the monkeys

  • Genting Highland, standing at 6000 feet above sea level. Only 45 minutes away from KL city. So much to see and do. Spend a day here checking it all out

  • Batu Caves - find a Hindu temple set in limestone caves. 272 steps to the top. Visit in the morning for less crowds as most people visit of an afternoon. Remember to cover your shoulders and knees

  • Petronas Towers, has a skybridge and observation deck if you so desire. Botanical Gardens, Water Park,

  • Visit THE FACE Suites to swim in their infinity pool and check out the views of the city

  • If you have come for the shopping then you must visit Bukit Bintang - malls and street food galore

  • Kampung Baru - a traditional village, visit for its night market and Malay wooden stilt houses

  • Kuala Lumpur Tower, also known as Menara Kuala Lumpur. You will spot this tall communications tower from most places in the city. It is the 7th tallest freestanding tower in the world. You can visit inside, they have a revolving restaurant and spectacular views as well as a 6D motion simulated thrill ride

  • Sunway Lagoon - is your ultimate theme park in Malaysia. It is huge - 88 acres and open until 11pm

  • Central Market - popular tourist attraction for cheap souvenirs

  • Check out the murals and street art around the city. Browse the streets of Jalan Alor, Changkat, and Lorong Panggung for your Instagram snaps. You will find the tallest mural in Malaysia, painted on the side of a 25 storey high building; Red by Sirocco

If you have time and want to see more of Malaysia then the city, catch a domestic flight to the islands of Langkawi or Penang. Flights are short and cheap. Both have their attractions and worth visiting. I have been several times to Langkawi, and it is a great spot for relaxing.
