Teaching Your Kids About The World

I don’t have my own children but I am always surrounded my children. I love to talk with them about my travels, other countries, different foods and experiences I have had around the world. I would love to instill a desire and love of travel in them as I know how rewarding and incredible it has been for me.

There is so much to learn about the world and it is such a big place. I encourage everyone to take their children out and explore. There is no better education then travelling and experiencing it all first hand without prejudice, stereotyping or generalisations.

Ways to do that include;

  • download the National Giraffic app - learn geography together. Great way to learn the location of countries in their continent.

  • watch shows together and discuss - such as National Geographic Kids or Destination World

  • read books that tell a story from another country - such as The Mirror by Jeanie Baker

  • read books about the world - such as At The Same Moment Around The World by Clotilde Perrin

  • provide an atlas and have a globe at home to spin and explore

  • visit Aquariums, Wildlife Worlds to spark an interest in different species of animals

  • visit Museums, Art Galleries that feature exhibitions from around the world

  • have the world map displayed on a wall

  • watch out someone else window online at Window Swap

  • teach your child how to say good morning and good night in different languages

  • making up dream itineraries - if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go first, where would you go next…

  • get them their own passport

  • cook meals together once a week from a different country

  • play computer games such as ‘Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?’

  • take your children on holidays - it doesn’t have to be for a long time, even a weekend away is a start

  • take virtual tours online

  • buy them a backpack for any trips you take

  • set up a tent out in the backyard for a night

What do you do to encourage a love of the world with your children? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
