Heading out for a weekend getaway but can’t find anyone to care for your furry friend? Why not bring them along? While once I saw dating a guy with a dog as a obstacle for travels, now his dog Reggie joins us on all our trips away.

Traveling with your dog can be a rewarding experience, but it does require some extra preparation.

Ensure a smooth trip for both you and your four legged companion by considering what to you will need to pack and prepare;

1. Pack Your Dog’s Bag

Just like you wouldn’t leave home without your essentials, don’t forget to pack your dog’s necessities. Here’s a checklist to ensure you’ve covered everything:

• Water Bowl/Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial for your dog. A collapsible water bowl is handy for travel

• Leash and Collar: Essential for walks and ensuring your dog’s safety

• Poo Bags: Always clean up after your pet to keep the environment pleasant for everyone.

• Towel and Shampoo: For any unexpected messes or a quick wash after a fun play in the mud or ocean

• Blanket: A familiar blanket can provide comfort and a sense of home

• Bed: Ensure your dog has a cozy spot to rest and sleep

• Treats: Bring along their favorite snacks to reward good behavior and keep them happy

• Wet or Dry Pet Food: Pack enough food to last the entire trip

• Food Bowl: Portable and easy to clean, for meal times on the go

2. Preparation is Key

Traveling with a dog requires more than just packing their bag. Here are some essential preparation steps:

• Find Dog-Friendly Accommodation: Not all places are welcoming to pets. Make sure to book accommodations that are specifically dog-friendly. Check their pet policy and any additional fees or restrictions. We pay an additional $150 whenever we stay in Sydney with our dog which usually includes a cleaning fee, a dog bed and water/food bowls and a treat. Dogs are usually not allowed to be left alone in the room so pack a picnic or check out the room service menu.

• Research Pet-Friendly Locations: Plan your activities around pet-friendly places. This includes parks, restaurants, and attractions. If you’re unsure about certain locations, have a backup plan for dining or sightseeing options. Travelling in Winter with a dog is never fun. You have to hope to find a place with outdoor seating and heating otherwise it is quite miserable sitting outdoors in the cold or takeaway will become your friend.

• Travel Arrangements: If you’re using a vehicle like a ute, ensure it’s equipped for pet safety. A well-ventilated and secure space in the back can be more comfortable for your dog than being confined inside the car. Also keep in mind if you are looking a hiring a car, they are usually not pet friendly, unless you do the sneaky... just saying.

3. Understand Limitations

Traveling with a dog comes with some restrictions:

• National Parks: Many national parks have strict rules about pets. They often require dogs to be on a leash or may not allow pets at all. Check park regulations in advance to avoid disappointment.

• Beaches: While many beaches are dog-friendly, always keep your dog on a leash and follow local regulations. Some beaches may have designated areas for dogs.
