R U OK? Day 2021

Today is R U OK? Day, a national day of action where Australians are reminded to reach out and ask others how they are feeling. It could be a neighbour, work colleague, or family member.

By taking the time, asking and listening to what they have to say with an open mind or making direct eye contact when in conversation or simply validating someone’s feelings can make a difference. It is not about solving their issue or taking on their feelings but instead being a sounding board or an ear for them.

Things you may like to ask include;

  • Are you really okay?

  • How is your spirit lately?

  • Is there anything you want to talk about?

  • Is there anything that is heavy on your heart?

  • How are things?

  • Have you taken a break lately?

These simple conversations can be life-changing. Life’s struggles are easier to face when we know we have support and people that will listen. It helps us to stay balanced and connected.

For those who do not sound okay or you may get a sense are struggling, encourage them to take action and refer them to;

  • Beyond Blue - 1300 224 636 or you can chat online

  • Lifeline Australia - 13 11 14

  • Kids Helpline - 1800 551 800

  • MensLine Australia - 1300 789 978

  • Headspace - 1800 650 890

R U OK? Day is a good reminder also to check in with yourself. To be honest and raw. To feel your feelings. Take a few deep breaths, assess the state of your body and how you are feeling in this present moment. Are you feeling stressed, anxious, overworked?

Take a break. Plan to do a workout, meditation, or cook something to make you feel and be your best. A good self-care routine is important.

Hope you are okay, well and staying safe.

Have you asked someone if they are okay today? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
