Realities About Dating Someone Older Than You

I have always had a thing for older guys. My first boyfriend was six years older, the next; was a thirteen-year difference, then it was eight years and now I am dating a guy eleven years older than me. Age has never made a difference in any of the relationships.

However, you may notice with dating someone older than you, that you have to accept things may be a little different if you were to be dating someone your own age or younger.

  • You may have to read them the menu - because they are losing their eyesight and it’s harder to read things, plus they left their glasses at home.

  • They may need one of those breathing apparatus for sleeping due to sleep apnea – thank goodness my boyfriend doesn’t need one of those

  • They may start balding or are already bald - all my boyfriends have been bald. I find it super attractive

  • Their dress sense and style is going out of fashion – some of the things my boyfriend thinks look great, are far from great. Or maybe that’s just a guy thing?

  • They will probably fall asleep while watching or reading something – this isn’t too often for us as we are early to bedtime but occasionally I need to wake him and help him to bed

  • The TV or radio volume will be much louderr than you think it needs to be

  • You will notice when you talk of the future, it is more about what they will do when they retire

  • Not as many Friday and Saturday nights out - that works for us but can be something we both miss on occasion so we still try to make an effort to go out at least one night a week

  • More doctor appointments - everything starts failing, squeaking or not working how it used to. You are the support and at times carer

  • Their taste in music may be different - we listen to two very different stations on the radio

  • They can be stubborn - they have had longer to form their habits, their beliefs and opinions. Or maybe that’s a guy thing too?

We laugh together at the things I have mentioned. They don’t have to be issues in a relationship but something you accept about the person. If it is an issue, then maybe it is not a good fit for you. Maybe you need to look for someone a bit younger.

Are you dating someone older? Or even younger? What’s your experience like? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
