Picture Books That Foster Friendship In The Classroom

I love using picture books as powerful discussion starters in the classroom. Whether it’s to explore emotions, build empathy, or dive into deeper learning, books help students connect with a topic in meaningful ways — and friendship is one of my favourites to explore.

There are so many wonderful picture books out there that spark conversation, encourage kindness, and help kids navigate the ups and downs of making and keeping friends. Here are a few of my go-to favourites:

📖 Blobfish Throws a Party by Miranda Paul

This quirky and funny story about a lonely blobfish who just wants some company is perfect for exploring feelings of inclusion, how we reach out to others, and what it means to be a friend. It’s silly, sweet, and surprisingly deep.

📖 Enemy Pie by Derek Munson

A classic for a reason! This story is a great tool for teaching kids that people we think of as “enemies” might turn out to be great friends — if we give them a chance. It’s perfect for talking about conflict, assumptions, and giving others the benefit of the doubt.

📖 The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig

This one always sparks beautiful conversations. It’s about a quiet boy named Brian who feels invisible — until a classmate reaches out and includes him. A gentle, moving story about empathy and inclusion.

📖 Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry

Told in rhyme and full of heart, this book is simple yet powerful. It’s a great introduction to how friends stand up for each other, especially in tough situations.

📖 Be a Friend by Salina Yoon

This beautifully illustrated book explores what it means to accept others for who they are — even if they’re different. It encourages kindness, acceptance, and emotional intelligence.

🧠 How I Use These Books

I like to pair these stories with questions like:

  • What makes a good friend?

  • Have you ever felt like one of these characters?

  • What would you do if you saw someone feeling left out?

You can also bring in songs, role-play activities, or art projects to help students express what friendship means to them.
