Celebrating Earth Day With Your Students

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd all around the world. This year the theme is ‘Restore Our Earth’.

Getting our students on board to help protect the environment, particularly when they are young, is a great idea. Last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

Amongst our busy curriculum, try to make time this week to particularly encourage a united approach towards caring for our planet and our future especially on Earth Day in your classroom.

Why not try to;

  • Plant something

  • Recycle something

  • Download and explore the WWF Together app to learn more about our amazing animals around the world

  • Watch The Lorax or read the book by Dr Seuss

  • Make a craft using recycled materials

  • Visit the official Earth Day website for many environmental educational resources for teachers

  • Share the books;

    • Old Enough To Save The Planet by Loll Kirby

    • A Planet Full of Plastic by Neal Layton

    • How To Make A Better World by Keilly Swift

    • Start Now! You Can Make A Difference by Chelsea Clinton

    • Every Day is Earth Day by Harriet Dyer

    • Earth Heroes – 20 Inspiring Stories Of People Saving Our World by Lily Dyu

  • Clean up the school, pick up rubbish or papers, fallen branches. Tidy the gardens

  • Brainstorm how children can personally take action and make a difference after viewing some facts

  • Watch this rap video about recycling

  • Plant a tree using treedom.com

We must Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. Every one of us needs a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.

How can you make helping out the planet a cool thing in your classroom? We would love it if you joined the conversation and left a comment below.
