How Lucky Am I

When traveling there can be alot of time spent at airports waiting for your next flight. So during my travels of 2015 I used this time to write a poem detailing all of the adventures I have been on so far.

I have been around the world a couple of times or even more,

I never know what adventures I will have once I step out the door.

Ridden a donkey, four camels, and been in too many planes,

Taken tuk tuk, horse and carriage, slept in overnight buses and trains.

Cliffs of Mohair, Machu Picchu, Great Wall of China,

Been shocked by the size of meals at American diners.

Threw a boomerang with the Aboriginals at Alice Springs,

Had three hot air balloon rides; one being over the Valley of the Kings.

Rode a Segway through Cartagena and seen the Hollywood sign in LA,

Can’t forget doing tai chi at sunrise on a junk boat on Ha Long Bay.

Celebrated my birthday in Buenos Aires, Rarotonga, and Langkawi,

Seen the Great Pyramids and taken photos on the salt flats of Uyuni.

Cried when I burnt my leg on a motorbike in Bali,

Swam at the beaches of Tonga, Vietnam and Hawaii.

Threw snowballs at strangers at the top of Jungfrau,

Jumped tandem from a plane in Namibia as well as Queenstown.

Seen Petra, Stonehenge, Abu Simbel and the city of Bath,

Even driven on the wrong side of the road which was a laugh.

Slept three nights on a felucca on the Nile River,

Eaten snails, haggis, black pudding, as well as chopped liver.

Ticking places off the list of World Heritage Sites,

Even stayed in a brand new hotel in Bolivia on opening night.

In Canada was fortunate to see over 40 orca whales and dolphins,

Mokoro ride on the Okavango and been serenaded on a gondola through Venice.

Went halves with my sister in a barra burger at Mataranka,

And met my fiancé having coffee on the streets of Casablanca.

Big Ben, Mona Lisa, Arc de Triomphe, and Statue of Liberty,

Took a risk and jumped the queue at the Vatican City.

Giant Buddha, the Sphinx, Terracotta Warriors,

Been given great advice and heard the stories of many taxi drivers.

Learnt it’s best to use the poncho at Niagara Falls,

And had my hair done by the kids in Uganda, they had a ball.

Notre Dame, Loch Ness, Colosseum,

Been to countless castles, churches, galleries, parks and museums.

Had sunburn, played in the snow and been caught in sun showers,

Seen the Eiffel, CN, Leaning, Twin and Petrona Towers.

Seen the changing of the guards at Windsor Castle,

Had my iPod taken on The Three Gorges Dam by some rascal.

Been amazed by the colour and the stillness of Lake Louise,

Seen Tasmanian devils, baby pandas, squirrels and kiwis.

Hung off the edge of Victoria Falls and risked my life,

White water rafted four times, sandboarded just twice,

Turkish coffee, jumping crocs, cooking classes in Vietnam,

Cycled through the streets of Austria, Cambodia, and Amsterdam.

Seen the big five and the great migration,

Spirit Island, The Citadel, and Grand Central Station.

Snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea,

Went to the Fairmont Hotel for afternoon High Tea.

I’ve done Contiki’s, Gecko’s and Hop On Hop Off tours,

And will never forget the foul egg smell in Rotarua.

Threw a coin and made a wish in the Trevi Fountain,

Been to the Rocky Mountains, Blue Mountains and to the top of Table Mountain.

Fish massage, helicopter flights, parasailing,

London Bridge, Pantheon and the Empire State Building.

Nearly blown away by the wind on the Golden Gate Bridge,

Had a vodka at the -5 Degrees Ice Bar which was much cooler than a fridge.

Dared to ride a bicycle along Death Road,

Learnt Arabic living eight months in Morocco.

Braved black water rafting in Waitomo caves in the dark,

Went mountain climbing to find gorillas in the Impenetrable National Park.

Been charged by an elephant while on an African Safari,

Been to the deserts; Western, Sahara, Namib, and Kalahari.

Tried eating with chopsticks in China but ended up asking for a fork,

Seen the lights of Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpar, Times Square and New York.

Been breathless in Bolivia from the altitude,

Had culture shock, jet lag and stood in way too many queues.

Stayed overnight on Milford Sound, which wasn’t so calm,

Kissed the stone at Blarney Castle, and respected Ramadan.

Had mint tea with the Berbers and homemade pizza in Rome,

Seen the town of the Beatles and where Anne Frank called home.

Woken up early to see sunrise over Uluru and Angkor Wat,

If you asked me which was the best, I would say the lot!
