Athens Attractions

Athens is one of my favourite cities around the world. I found it to be so much fun alongside the fact it is absolutely incredible that there are these ancient ruins just sitting there amongst the city. Athens has real history and it is amazing to see. Let alone incredible views!

In Athens try to base yourself and stay near Monastiraki station. It has a super cool vibe and is only 10€ to get there from Athens airport, take the blue metro line 3. I stayed at the City Circus Hostel and loved it. It is only a four-minute walk through beautiful cafe-lined streets to get from the train station.

Athens is a great place to visit as there are so many things to see and do like;

  • Acropolis – start here – rise as early as possible to get in before the crowds and the busloads of tourist groups that will block every photo  – the view is pretty special. Sunrise or sunset is incredible too.

  • Also visit the Parthenon and Erechtheion that are on the same site as the Acropolis.

  • Buy the combo ticket at the gate that will get you into seven sites and is valid for five-days – they are worth visiting and can be done in a day if you start early. Cheaper than buying individual tickets. Visit the Acropolis, Hadrians Library, Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Archaeological site of Lykeion, Keraneikos and the Olympieion

  • Ancient Agora of Athens - has plenty of ruins to check out

  • Panathenaic Stadium

  • Mount Lycabettus - climb up for incredible views over Athens or take the funicular if you are not up for the hike

  • Kapnikarea - a really old beautiful church

  • Theatre of Dionysus

  • Temple of Olympian Zeus, Temple of Athena Nike, Temple of Hephaestus, Temple of Apollo Patroos

  • Museum of the Ancient Agora, Museum of Cycladic Art, National Archaeological Museum

  • Hellenic Parliament – make sure to watch the change of guards ceremony at 10 am – this is a must-see, it is hilarious

  • Acropolis Museum - great for artefacts, located not far from the Acropolis

  • Monastiraki Flea Market

  • Great areas to eat - Plaka, Psiri and Gazi. They are so many bakeries offering delicious pastries. Greek food is soooo good.
