Since overseas travel has been out of reach for a while, I decided to explore the beautiful landscapes of country NSW—and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot than Coquun Cottage. Nestled in the peaceful seclusion of Moonan Flat, in the Upper Hunter Valley, Coquun Cottage is the perfect retreat for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.
A Sophisticated Country Escape
Coquun Cottage is everything we could dream of in a country getaway—charming, yet sophisticated. The cottage is owned and serviced by Annie Bell, while its stunning design and styling come courtesy of Annie’s daughter, Louy. The result is a perfectly balanced space with natural and neutral tones, creating an inviting and tranquil atmosphere.
One of the first things you'll notice upon arrival is the breathtaking views that surround the cottage. From the large windows, you can take in the sweeping vistas of the countryside—a perfect setting to relax and enjoy the serene beauty of nature, from both inside and outside on the wide verandah surrounding the house.
Comfort and Luxury at Every Turn
The two bedroom cottage is not only beautiful but incredibly comfortable. The fireplace creates a cozy ambiance, especially during colder evenings, and the luxurious bathtub invites you to unwind after a long day. The lush bed is one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in, ensuring a restful night’s sleep surrounded by nothing but nature's sounds.
Every detail of Coquun Cottage is carefully thought out, with no expense spared. The bathroom is outfitted with gorgeous travertine tiles, a bath to soak and relax in and the Aesop toiletries add a touch of luxury to your daily routine. You’ll also find lovely touches like clay dinnerware, T2 herbal tea, and a gourmet breakfast to prepare in the luxurious kitchen, all provided to make your stay even more special.
Arriving in the afternoon, we were welcomed by the warmth of the fire already crackling in the fireplace, along with a homemade slice that made the perfect treat to kick start our stay.
Unplug and Unwind
If you’re looking for a slow-paced, go-slow kind of place, Coquun Cottage is it. The location is incredibly peaceful, with nothing but the sounds of birds and the gentle rapids of the nearby Hunter River. There’s a lovely creek walk that leads you down to the river, where you can dip your toes into the cool waters and simply take in the surrounding beauty. It is a great getaway for the soul and to replenish your energy.
The outdoor firepit is another great spot to relax in the evenings—whether you’re sipping wine under the stars or simply enjoying the serenity of the countryside. This is a place where time seems to slow down, and you can truly recharge your batteries.
A Perfect Country Retreat
Coquun Cottage has a two-night minimum stay, and you’ll quickly realize why. The peace and quiet of the surroundings make you want to linger and soak it all in. The closest place to eat is the Linga Longa Pub, a 40-minute drive away, so be sure to pack your own food to cook. The cottage provides everything you need for a self-catered stay, including a fully-equipped kitchen to prepare your meals at your leisure.
Exploring the Upper Hunter Valley
The drive from Sydney to Coquun Cottage is a beautiful journey through the Upper Hunter Valley. As you make your way through ridges, valleys, and rolling hills, you’ll pass picturesque creeks, horse studs, and farms, home to cows, sheep, and kangaroos.
