Talofa and Fiafia!

In April, I quietly jetted off to Samoa for a solo five day getaway. Only a short flight from Brisbane in the South Pacific made me a quick fan as well as the crystal clear water and the way the country is untouched by tourism.

Whilst relaxation was the main reason I visited Samoa, you can also find things to do to keep you busy;

Afu Aau Waterfall - Hidden amidst Samoa's verdant landscapes lies the Afu Aau Waterfall, a breathtaking cascade that epitomizes the country's natural splendour. Immerse yourself in the tranquil surroundings as you marvel at the beauty of this cascading wonder.
Falealupo Rainforest Reserve Canopy Walk: Walking Amongst Giants - Embark on an exhilarating adventure through the Falealupo Rainforest Reserve with its thrilling canopy walk. Suspended 30 meters above the forest floor and extending for 1km, this walk offers a unique perspective of Samoa's rich biodiversity and lush greenery.
Falease'ela River Walk - Cool deep swimming pools are separated by black lava rock and stunning waterfalls
Papaseea Sliding Rocks - A 5m rock slide into a deep freshwater pool
Palolo Deep Marine Reserve - Swim or snorkel
Lalomanu Crater Walk - A steep 10 or 15 minute walk through the bush to an incredible view of the coastline
To-Sua Ocean Trench - Dive into the azure waters of the To-Sua Ocean Trench, a natural swimming pool unlike any other. Open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and with a small entrance fee of 20 tala, this geological marvel is a must-visit destination. Be sure to time your visit during high tide for the best experience, and don't forget to bring sturdy shoes to navigate the stairs and rocky terrain.
Piula Cave Pool and Beyond - Explore the Piula Cave Pool, a hidden oasis within volcanic rock formations. Then, journey to Falefa and Fiupisia Falls, Sopoága Falls viewpoint, and the colourful tales of Lalomanu Beach for a day filled with adventure and relaxation.
Alofaaga Blowholes - Experience the rush of the legendary Samoa Blowholes, where the ocean forces jets of water hundreds of metres into the air.
Nauma Island - Go on a day trip or stay overnight. Snorkel to see the turtles.
Cultural Encounters - Experience the vibrant culture of Samoa through encounters with its friendly locals and traditional customs. From greeting locals with a cheerful "Talofa" to donning a lavalava, the traditional wrap worn by both men and women, immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Samoan culture.

Opt for a more authentic experience by staying in fales, traditional Samoan beach huts, for a truly immersive island getaway. Fales are a fun way to stay, and I loved the experience of staying in them on hot nights and hearing the waves lap the shore. I stayed at Ifiele de Plantation, which was terrific, and I can highly recommend it as super convenient to the airport for an early morning flight.

If you are after something more luxurious, consider Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa, or Sinalei Reef Resort and Spa on Upolu or Le Lagoto Resort and Spa on Savai'i or where you can unwind amidst stunning ocean views and impeccable service.

Practical Tips for Your Samoan Adventure

Remember that taxis are not metered when exploring Samoa, so be sure to negotiate prices with drivers.
You will likely find restaurants only in the central city of Apia, so be prepared with your food or eat at your accommodations restaurant.
Consider trying the colourful and lively public buses for an authentic island experience.
It is handy to have some knowledge of the language.
Don't forget to embrace the digital detox, as Wi-Fi is limited in Samoa. This will allow you to fully disconnect and immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty.
Catch the ferry from Upolu over to Savaii. It only takes one hour. You can buy tickets at the port. Check online for departure times.

Samoa is a destination like no other, where natural wonders and cultural traditions intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you're marvelling at cascading waterfalls, swimming in crystal-clear ocean trenches, or embracing the warmth of Samoan hospitality, you will surely leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
