Maths Lessons Ideas For Kindy
If you ask me, Kindergarten is one of the best years to teach. You can easily make it fun, and disguise the learning without the kiddies even realising.
If its programming time for you and you are after some math lesson ideas for Kindergarten, I hope these may be helpful.
Teaching Patterns:
Use the "Banana Banana Meatballs" song from Go Noodle to introduce and reinforce patterns. Have students identify and create their own patterns using bananas and meatballs as visual aids.
Teaching Counting:
Utilize the "Big Number Song" to engage Kindergarteners with larger numbers. Incorporate visuals like large number cards or a number line to help them visualize and understand the concept of counting.
Teaching Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication:
Play the game "Around the World" (also known as "Circle Champion") where students stand in a circle and solve math problems as they progress around the circle. Customize the problems according to the targeted operation (addition, subtraction, or multiplication). Change up the dice from dots to numerals or from a six sided to a 12 sided dice.
Skip Counting:
Introduce skip counting by twos, fives or tens using a hundreds chart. Have students identify and discuss patterns made by counting in twos on the chart. Review and reinforce skip counting by twos by having students count in a circle together. Encourage active participation and correct any errors as they count together.
Utilizing Picture Books:
Incorporate math-themed picture books to reinforce mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging way. Choose books that align with the topics being covered in class. Select some books from this blog post here.
Using Games and Hands-on Materials:
Implement math games and hands-on activities that involve counting, addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Examples include using manipulatives like counting blocks or interactive math games on tablets or computers.
Math Grouping According to Ability:
Organise students into math groups based on their ability level to provide targeted instruction and support. This allows for differentiated learning experiences tailored to each student's needs.
Ten Minutes a Day Game Teaching a Skill:
Dedicate a portion of each math lesson to playing a game that reinforces a specific math skill, such as counting, addition, subtraction, or skip counting by twos. Find my list of warm up maths games ideas here.
Group Work:
Facilitate group activities where students collaborate to solve math problems, create patterns, or complete hands-on math tasks. Encourage communication and teamwork among group members
These lesson ideas provide a variety of engaging and interactive activities to teach math concepts to Kindergarten students while incorporating elements like songs, games, and hands-on materials to enhance learning.
