Teachers Are Leaders Too

Some naive people may think all teachers do is teach. Well, aren’t they wrong!

Being a teacher is a package deal. You have to be able to be a counsellor, police officer, psychic, photographer, doctor, detective, comedian as well as a great leader.

As teachers, we model every day, we are basically the student’s role models in the way we act, our attitudes, our aspirations and the expectations we hold of others. All these affect our students and what they want to achieve or want to learn.

A great leader;

  • will help others to reach their greatest potential

  • are role models by the way they speak and act

  • build and maintain a healthy team spirit

  • help people achieve their goals

  • set the direction

  • make things happen

  • build on strengths and weaknesses of the individual team players

  • will be well respected

Leaders must be;

  • trustworthy

  • good communicators

  • accountable

  • build relationships

  • inspiring to others

  • accept their mistakes and understand that no one is perfect

  • willing to try out new ideas

  • flexible

All of us have the potential to be great leaders. And in our role as teachers we have a responsibility to be great leaders to our young students.
